The Kynn Family.
No, we literally are family.
Kynn Brew was established in 2023 by three brothers, one slightly questionable idea, and a derelict outbuilding behind an old printing shop in Birmingham.
We didn’t set out to build a brewery empire. That’s not us.
We just loved good beer, good company, and a challenge of turning a run-down space, second-hand kit, and a bunch of up-cycled materials into something new. After a summer renovating the outbuilding — armed with more enthusiasm than experience — the brewery slowly came to life.
But the story began a little earlier. Sam, the middle brother, caught the bug first when he started to brew at home. What started as curiosity quickly became a plethora of fermented creations.
Turns out, he was pretty good at it.
His beers went on to win gold awards all over the country in national home-brew competitions.
He shared his beers with his brothers. We drank them. Then we drank some more. Somewhere along the way, we all became obsessed and the beer gave us enough confidence to take the leap.
Eventually, we decided to build a brewery. Literally.
Built. Not bought.
That philosophy is still a big part of Kynn.
We like making things last. Finding another use for something. Working with what we've got rather than constantly replacing it with something newer and shinier.
The brewery wasn't built overnight and it wasn't bought from a catalogue. It grew organically, piece by piece.
It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. The journey has been hard, messy, and full of lessons learned the ‘practical way’! For example, the time a small miscalculation during fermentation nearly turned one tank into Birmingham’s newest landmark: a short-lived fountain of beer that threatened to make international news. The vessel built up pressure and for a brief moment it looked like Brum might witness a geyser of beer visible for miles. Disaster was narrowly avoided. Lessons were firmly learned. We now treat the process with the respect it very much deserves.
Small batches. Big Community.
We can only take most of the credit… the rest we couldn’t have done without the help of family and friends, who gave time, effort, and patience (and are probably still owed a fair amount of free beer).
Along the way, we were welcomed into an incredible craft brewing community — making friends across the UK and collaborating with talented brewers and experts who generously share their knowledge of the craft.
We were made in Birmingham, but our ideas aren't confined by the brewery walls. But don’t get us wrong, there’s no grand master plan. We’re small. Deliberately small.
We brew in small batches, giving us the freedom to experiment, change direction, chase an idea and occasionally make life unnecessarily difficult for ourselves.
Join us on our journey.
